I recently had a comment on one of my videos saying that non-consent is icky and shouldn’t be glorified. That stopped me dead for a second. I didn’t think I’d glorified it at all. In fact, I think the contrast between what my heroines go through and what they end up with is how a good story is made.
To set the scene, this particular video focused on an excerpt from Omega Lost where the heroine is watching another omega in the training center. The teacher is forcing them to fellate large silicone dildos and the omega says she isn’t interested in having alphas. Which, if you know the Omega Reckoning universe, you’d know that this is not really an option. And this is what the viewer landed on and decided they hated.
Honestly, I get it. If you’re scrolling cute cat videos and suddenly a forced fellatio video comes up (though not explicit), it would be shocking. And possibly not to your liking overall.
My books are NOT for everyone. And if you don’t even know about omegaverse, imagine the shock!
So, I don’t blame this person for leaving the comment. However, it does raise the question, is non-consent okay in books? More specifically in romance books.
Personally, I love a good dark romance and while my books are somewhat gray, they’re certainly not pitch black. That being said, there are SA themes throughout and that can be triggering. Which is why I ask people to read the trigger warnings first.
As with anything else in this world, no content will suit everybody and that’s fine. That’s what makes us unique. But please, don’t yuck someone else’s yum!
What do you think of this whole thing? Is non-consent okay to include in romance books?
